Winner of architecture award in Tannay seeks new owner for undisclosed amount
International flair meets Swiss technology in house with stunning glass walls, unique olive trees, and views of Lake Geneva and the Alps

Lovers of spectacular design now have an opportunity to lay their hands on a property that managed to snatch the American Architecture PrizeAAP in 2017, in the category of residential architecture.
This magnificent 10-room contemporary property, built in 2014 on a 2,260 square meter plot, is located in one of the finest neighborhoods of Tannay in canton Vaud, close to international schools and 20 minutes from Geneva airport.
The current owner, Mr Ali Hosseini, designed the house himself, with the architects only supervising the development of the project. A commodity trader by profession, but with property design and development being his true passions, Hosseini had engaged in several smaller building projects before embarking on this large project of designing and constructing his dream family home. “It was a very special project for me personally”, explains Hosseini. “I approached some very good architects and introduced the design that I had developed. They questioned some of the ideas but I was certain of what I wanted, and eventually they understood that I would not compromise.”
This personal involvement is reflected in the exquisite design and the level of tasteful details, of a house that allows for genuine quality of life and is easy to picture as one’s home.”My philosophy was to unite a simple design with high quality materials, that would all come together in a very comfortable and functional living space. I was involved in many details of design, and even negotiated with suppliers of some of the materials”, Hosseini continues.
Hosseini’s design vision resulted in a property that in many ways challenges what is “typically Swiss”, while still paying tribute to the excellence of Swiss technology. The design is very much inspired by Brazilian architecture and a variety of beautiful homes that Hosseini had encountered and come to love. In fact, the contemporary design, comprised of four rectangular cubes stacked on top of each other, turned out to be a bit of a challenge to build in a Swiss setting: the team had to wait several years before a regulation was changed to allow flat-roofed properties in the area. When the two years of construction finally came to an end, the result was the first building in Tannay with a flat roof.
Another aspect of the house that may be perceived as less conservative, is the seamless transition between the exterior and interior.”I didn’t want to shield the house from the exterior. We hardly have any walls, but focused on the glass, which is quite unusual in this area. From every point of the house, you can see parts of the garden.”
The property’ s wide, floor-to-ceiling window walls indeed make this property a showstopper. Allowing for maximum sunlight and transparency towards the garden, they blur the lines between the indoors and outdoors. And while the design concept may not be traditionally Swiss, the superior technology behind these glass doors are. These Swiss triple glazed windows have extremely thin frames and can be stacked on top of each other when slid to the side. This means that the glass walls can be almost entirely opened up on both sides of the property – creating the perfect breeze from the mountains towards the lake, and giving the ultimate feel of being outdoors while not having to even leave the couch.
The striking design of the house combines bare concrete, glass and dark cedar in an intriguing yet well-balanced mix of textures, together making up a contrasting, raw and contemporary look, which perfectly balances against the green exterior.
The cross-shaped design allows for generous living areas, of a total of 500 square meters, distributed over 10 rooms. On top of the six bedrooms, two huge living rooms and four bath/shower rooms with toilets, the house also includes a hammam shower room, a games room, a studio in the basement and a wine cellar. The property, which is built on three levels, is constructed to the highest quality standards, with the latest building technologies and with careful attention to the smallest of details. With geo-thermal heating from the ground, and roof solar panels warming up the water of the house, there are no costs for the heating of the property.
Hosseini’ s willingness to push the boundaries is also reflected in the exterior, with its ten olive trees making up the center piece of the garden. These trees of more than 300 years of age were brought in from Spain, despite discouragement of the landscaping architects. “Olive trees usually don’t do well in the Swiss climate, Hosseini explains. But we did some research and managed to find a way to make them flourish. In the first year, we harvested 200 kg of olives.”
The exterior also features a pool surrounded by a large wooden deck parallel to the South facade, and with the cherry on top being views of Lake Geneva and the Alps.

The unique shapes of the house are not only aesthetically intriguing but are well thought through and truly facilitate comfortable, modern living. For example, the L shaped design allows you to stand in the kitchen and view the giant library at the very end of the building, through the glass walls. With three of its walls being comprised of glass, the kitchen has become the focal point of the house, where adults can cook while still having an overview of the children by the pool.
“Ultimately this is a modern house – but not a cold house”, Hosseini concludes. I achieved my vision of creating a family home, which is interesting and unique, yet functional, accessible, and comfortable.”
